Local attorney Art Brender will share untold stories from a groundbreaking civil rights case, as the evening features Tarrant County’s robust slate of Democratic judicial candidates
FORT WORTH, Texas — The Tarrant County Democratic Party is bringing law, politics and history together for its August end-of-month party on Friday, Aug. 28.
The evening features attorney and former Tarrant County Democratic Party Chair, Art Brender, who argued the landmark Watson v. Fort Worth Bank & Trust case before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Brender will share behind-the-scenes stories from the case, including stories he has never publicly told before.
The 1988 case began after Clara Watson, a Black female, was repeatedly passed over for supervisory promotions while white applicants were selected instead.
Brender argued that seemingly neutral, subjective employment decisions could still produce unlawful discrimination under Title VII. The Supreme Court agreed that disparate-impact analysis could apply to subjective employment practices.
The evening will also spotlight Tarrant County Democrats’ robust slate of judicial candidates appearing on the November 2026 ballot.
Guests can meet candidates, hear about the races ahead and connect with Democrats working to elect judges throughout Tarrant County.
“This is an evening where history, the law and Tarrant County’s future come together,” said Tarrant County Democratic Party Chair, Allison Campolo, Ph.D.
“We want people to hear an incredible hometown story while meeting the judicial candidates asking voters to place their trust in them.”
The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at Amphibian Stage, 120 S. Main St. in Fort Worth.
The suggested donation is $25, which includes happy hour wine & beer, appetizer snacks and an evening of conversation, candidates and Democratic community.
For aspiring attorneys, the evening also offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from the lawyer who argued the case before the nation’s highest court.Law students and those considering legal careers are especially encouraged to attend.
There is a student suggested donation of $10, making the event especially accessible for college students, law students and others beginning their professional careers.

Proceeds support Tarrant County Democrats’ regular fundraising efforts, including the Coordinated Campaign working to elect Democrats across the county.
