Councilwoman Deborah Peoples
Dr. Opal Lee Empowerment Award Recipient
Deborah Peoples — A Voice for Unity and Progress
Deborah Peoples has spent her life proving that leadership is about more than titles—it’s about lifting people up and bringing communities together.
As the first African American woman to chair the Tarrant County Democratic Party, she turned passion into progress, building one of the most energized grassroots movements in Texas. She showed that when people are empowered to vote, to speak, and to lead, real change follows.
Deborah twice stepped forward to run for Mayor of Fort Worth, breaking barriers and inspiring countless others to believe in what’s possible. Her vision was clear: a city where every neighborhood matters, every family has opportunity, and every voice is heard.
Before politics, she rose through the ranks at AT&T, becoming a respected corporate leader. But she never forgot her roots or her calling—to stand up for justice, fairness, and the power of community.
Deborah Peoples embodies resilience, hope, and service. Her journey tells us this: true leadership is not about spotlight, but about service. It’s about opening doors, breaking ceilings, and leaving the world better than you found it.
